Through the Looking Glass

Through the looking glass is about a world accessible in a mirror. How glass can transport you to another time and place. Here is my story.

Last night a tiny splinter of glass pierced the bottom of my foot. I bled for some time which surprised me and that one pin point puncture totally changed my whole evening.

Glass seems to have been. In my life in mysterious ways. The glasses for ice cream and champagne. The time in the lab when the beaker broke in my hand. The time I put my foot through a glass door. The pocket mirror I had from the Victoria and Albert museum that my coworker stole. The mirrors I have been gifted.

Most traumatic is the time attackers used a glass implement. The event happened about 25 years ago this time of year. Cornered in a desolate place the men violated my inner world and being with a glass bottle that broke.

Crying, bleeding, in the cold water in a forced shower. Driven to town and having to make up a story at the cleaners. Left alone, scared , cold and bleeding in the winter wind.

I eventually got my courage up dove in the cold Mediterranean Sea, trusting in the power of the water and the waves. I healed. I fought my way back home to the USA. Putting the trauma behind me. Understanding how one piece of glass can change how things look.
